Black Moms Matter: A Conversation with Congressional Champion Lauren Underwood

In the U.S., Black women are over three times more likely to die from a pregnancy-related cause than White women. And, what’s more? More than 80% of these pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. Maternal healthcare policy is one issue making bipartisan progress in Congress, thanks in large part to the championing of Congresswoman Lauren Underwood. As Co-Chair of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, Rep. Underwood has helped to secure $253M in federal funding for the ‘Momnibus’ package of bills — but we have a long way to go until this crisis is rectified. In this conversation, WME’s Jeanell English interviews Rep. Underwood as we explore what’s needed to close the gaps in care for Black mothers across the country.
